The Bachelor 2020: Locky Gilbert’s health and fitness routine

When you picture the life of a bachelor, and especially The Bachelor, what do you imagine? A date every night of the week? Fine-dining restaurants followed by late-night clubs? Sleeping in every morning and doing it all again?

The reality is just little different. In fact, when I caught up with Locky Gilbert this week, he told me his schedule was more senior citizen than party animal. Dinner is at 6.30pm and just two hours later he’s switching out the lights. And you won’t believe what he considers a sleep-in.

“Normally I’m up at 6am and I’m in bed by 8.30pm,” he tells Health Hacker.

“I’ve been sleeping in lately and it’s killing me – I woke up at 8am today.”

With filming wrapped on the 2020 season of The Bachelor, Locky is back in his Perth hometown where he faced the now-familiar two-week isolation period when he touched down.

He says exercise is usually a huge part of his life (and given his chiselled physique, likely played no small part in his being selected as this year’s bachelor), with running, mountain biking and weight training all part of his weekly routine.

But even newly crowned TV stars need to find innovative ways to keep fit when in lockdown and for Locky, that meant literally running in circles.

“I usually go for 10km runs every second day and 40km mountain bike rides about three times a week. I find that it’s a really good way to clear your head and focus,” he says.

“I absolutely love my mountain bike rides. I go up to Kalamunda, east of Perth, where there is a downhill mountain biking track, or near my house there is another 60km track.

“But I’ve been isolating for the past two weeks in Perth so I’ve had to keep myself entertained by running around the house. I ran 10km around the house today. One lap is 700m, so I do around 14 laps.”

Hopefully Locky hasn’t tired himself out too much. Given The Bachelor doesn’t start until 9.30pm in Perth, he has plenty of late nights ahead of him.

1. Fasting

“I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for around two years now, where I won’t eat until lunch time,” Locky says.

“I don’t eat from around 6.30pm until 12pm the next day — it’s probably why I go to bed so early to be honest.”

2. Eliminate the negative

“If you want to be happy, do things that make you happy,” Locky says.

“Eliminate things that don’t make you happy. If you don’t like your job, change things up. In this current climate, it’s so easy to find things that you like so you can do the thing that you love, so find what makes you happy and go for it.”

3. Just do it

“My biggest motivational tip is to just get started,” Locky says.

“The hardest thing to do is to start, so once you do that, the rest will come naturally. No matter what it is, you just need to get started. You can’t succeed if you don’t start.”

The Bachelor airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm on Channel 10
