Whether you walk for fitness or fun, you can get more health benefits and avoid injury by getting into “walking shape.”
“Because of its simplicity, walking as exercise or leisure is often not seen as similar to other fitness endeavors,” says Doug Kahn, a physical therapist with Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Center. “Yet, you should approach walking with the same attention as any sport or activity. If you want to get the most from your walking and be ready for challenges like distance, hills, and uneven surfaces, you need to stay in good walking condition.”
