74-year-old becomes fitness influencer after losing four stone

An elderly woman from Canada has proven that you can become a fitness pro at any age.

Three years ago, hoping to improve symptoms of high blood pressure and arthritis, which made it difficult for her to walk up and down stairs, Joan MacDonald, 74, committed to a gruelling fitness schedule.

She got a new gym membership and changed her diet, focusing on macronutrients and having five healthy meals per day.

Since then, Joan has lost over four stone and has become a social media sensation, with 876,000 dedicated fans following her journey.

The inspiration for the lifestyle change came after her daughter Michelle, who works as a fitness coach in Mexico, was ‘on the verge of tears’, asking her mum to look after her health.

‘Three years ago I began this long, slow journey and now I realise that there really isn’t any end to it,’ she wrote on her Instagram account, called Train With Joan.

‘At any moment we can make a decision to change. 

‘No matter how difficult or challenging life is, we must remain steadfast in our aim and keep inching forward.

‘When I got started I never imagined I’d be where I am today.

‘I just wanted to get my health back and get off my medication. Each door we step through leads to another door and then another.

‘I hope you all keep choosing to grow!

‘To learn to love yourself, take the best care of yourself, and dare to dream and love with your whole heart again.’ 

Once she had lost the weight, Joan’s body transformation goals shifted to building muscle and strength training.

The badass, who lives in Cobourg, a small town in Ontario, now hosts workout sessions through her social media account, with the aim to motivate others.

Joan has also released an e-book of fitness tips with daughter Michelle and her partner Jean.

As for her own routine, she still works out at least five days per week, 90 minutes each time, and does a lot of weight lifting.

Joan added: ‘I stuck to my guns and never gave up. My motto was, “I don’t mind if my changes are slow”.

‘I am going to go at my own pace and this time the changes are going to last the rest of my life.’
